Modeling of Future Water Demand and Mitigation Requirements for a Growing Municipality

A GoldSim model was used to project the amount of water that would be required to mitigate for the combined fifty year growth demand from a new production well, and to meet instream flow requirements for a nearby river. The model simulated the amount of water required for mitigation (consisting of purchases from another utility and pumping from a local deep aquifer). The model also projected the required payouts to a power company to compensate for reduced flows at a power generation station due to consumptive use. Model results were used to assist in determining the quantity and timing of mitigation water purchases, and to facilitate negotiations with other stakeholders.
