This model describes heat transfer from a pipeline to the ambient environment and simulates how step changes or pulses on the inlet temperature propagate through the pipeline. This model is a predecessor to the DPHX models "HeatXp/c" and it shows an alternative approach for the numerical approximations that are described in those models.

The model takes two heat transfer processes into account: (1) water flow through the pipeline and (2) the heat flows through the pipe wall. The environment is assumed to have a constant ambient air temperature, and heat transfer from the outer surface of the pipeline is due to free or mixed convection (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_convection).
