Issaquah, WA (USA) - August 19, 2005– Ian Miller, Stefan Knopf and Rick Kossik of the GoldSim Technology Group (GTG) contributed a chapter to the book "GIS, Spatial Analysis, and Modeling" published by ESRI Press and edited by David Maguire, Michael Batty and Michael Goodchild. The book is concerned with modeling and spatial analysis within a GIS (geographic information system) framework and takes a pragmatic, software-centric view of the tools, techniques, methods and models currently available to geographic analysts, modelers, software engineers and GIS professionals. The book is a direct outcome of a workshop held by ESRI in late 2003 that assembled a small expert group with hands-on experience of modeling within, and linking to, commercial GIS software. Rick Kossik of GTG attended the workshop and discussed a prototype that had been developed by GTG at the request of ESRI to link GoldSim directly to ESRI's GIS software.
The chapter that GTG contributed to the book, "Linking General-Purpose Dynamic Simulation Models with GIS" describes different classes of dynamic GIS models and discusses two alternative conceptual approaches for linking general-purpose dynamic simulation models with GIS. As part of this discussion, the prototype to link GoldSim to GIS is briefly described. The chapter closes by describing some of the technical issues involved in creating a robust system that would provide the simulation model/GIS linkage.
The book is available from ESRI Press.
