Optimize Pond Capacity and Discharge Flow Rate
This is a pond discharge versus pond capacity problem. It is assumed the shape of the pond is a cube. The objective of the problem is to find the optimum combination of pond size and discharge rate. The optimization variables are the pond capacity and the area of the orifice in the orifice plate, which controls discharge. The larger the pond volume, the higher the cost to construct the pond. The higher the discharge, the higher the discharge fee. Smaller ponds require higher discharge rates in order to prevent overflow. Some mixture of the two (pond size and orifice size) will provide the minimum cost solution.
